Alpine Aqueduct Reach 1 Replacement and Resiliency Project

Alpine Aqueduct Reach 1

The Alpine Aqueduct Reach 1 (AA-1) is a critical water supply facility that services over 1.6 million Utahns. The current alignment of AA-1 is approximately 1.4 miles in length and runs from the Olmsted Reservoir (near the mouth of Provo Canyon) to the Don A. Christiansen Regional Water Treatment Plant (DACRWTP), north of 800 North in Orem.

Alpine Aqueduct Reach 1 Construction Project

Starting in spring of 2025, the Central Utah Water Conservancy District (CUWCD) and the Department of the Interior-Central Utah Project Completion Act Office (Interior) plan to begin construction on a new Alpine Aqueduct Reach 1 alignment. The current AA-1 needs to be realigned to protect residents and maintain reliable service. The AA-1 project will install a new 108-inch diameter pipeline which will include a tunnel. Part of the AA-1 project will be constructed along 1060 North and a section of Somerset Drive (1360 East) in Orem. Construction through the neighborhood is anticipated to take place in March 2025 - October 2025 for utility relocations and March 2026 - October 2026 for AA-1 pipeline installation (large pipe with 108-inch diameter). The AA-1 project is expected to be complete in early 2027.

Alignment

Alignment Map of Alpine Aqueduct

Why was this alignment selected?

CUWCD and Interior, as Joint Lead Agencies, completed a National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) study to determine an alignment as well as other studies. Following a public meeting, the agencies selected a Preferred Alternative with the alignment that included 1060 North because it improves the physical integrity, functionality, and long-term viability of the aqueduct. For more information on the environmental process, view the FONSI and Final EA, Final Project Report (Phase II), and Phase I Report.
